Information on the recruitment for 2026 is presented in the sections below. The main change from previous years, is the establishment of Regional Training Partnerships (RTPs). VGMTP will be proactively supporting recruitment into regional positions by allowing appointment to RTP positions before the Centralised match.
Information on how to apply can be found below.
Recruitment for 2026
In 2025 there will be 3 pathways open to secure an Advanced Training in Geriatric Medicine position for 2026. These pathways are:
1. Regional Training Partnership (RTP) appointment
RTP AT positions are led by regional health services and may include a rotation from the regional health service to a metropolitan position or a commitment for a metropolitan position following a period at a regional site (assuming satisfactory completion and assessment of regional placement).
These positions may be offered prior to the central match and may include multiple years.
These positions offer a number of advantages which include:
- Unique training experiences with the option for bespoke arrangements to meet your training needs.
- Security in obtaining an AT position prior to the centralised match. As some RTP's may be planned over multiple years, this might result in completing a bespoke, planned geriatric medicine advanced training program without ever needing to apply through the Centralised Match.
- Experience and exposure to new health services which is likely to increase your consultant employment opportunities in the future.
2. Centralised Match
The Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) will conduct the Geriatric Medicine Specialty Match on behalf of the Department of Health (DH) and the Victorian Geriatric Medicine Training Program (VGMTP).
To be able to participate in the centralised match, applicants must be eligible for Advanced Physician Training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).
The centralised match is for full-time Advanced Training positions. There will be a single round match for both continuing trainees and new trainees.
Applicants for the centralised match must accept that the results of the match are binding.
The match is exclusively for Victorian Health Services. Separate applications are required for positions in other states or territories. Please do not participate in the centralised match if you are not prepared to accept the outcome of the match.
3. Part time/Job share positions
Part time and job share positions may be negotiated and filled at any time with individual health services. Each health service will have different opportunities and requirements. We would encourage you to explore these options early so that, if no suitable position is available, you can still consider applying for a FT position through the centralised match.
How to Apply
1. Regional Training Partnership positions
Each RTP is unique and will offer a different experience. Expressions of Interest and applications should be made directly to the RTP of interest.
A list of RTP positions and contact emails are provided below:
2. Centralised Match
The process for the PMCV Centralised Match will be similar to previous years. You must register with the PMCV and follow the instructions regarding submission of preferences. Health Services may offer interviews and other recruitment activities.
Remember – the outcome of the PMCV match is binding.
To participate in the match, you must apply both to PMCV and to every Health Service of interest. When registering with PMCV you will be asked to provide your details, CV, three referees and your preference list of Health Services. Health services will only be able to access the information of candidates who have listed that health service as one of their preferences.
The centralised match is for full-time positions. Special arrangements are in place to support regional recruitment and a flexible approach for part-time trainees. RTP, part-time and part-year positions may be appointed outside the match. Please contact the Health Services directly. Candidates securing a RTP position or part-time employment should not participate in the match. Candidates who have not been successful in securing part-time employment may participate in the centralised match for a full-time position.
Applications open on the PMCV Allocation and Placement Service website (Allocation & Placement Service - PMCV) for the Geriatric Medicine match for continuing trainees and new trainees at 9:00 AM 07 July 2025 and close at 5:00 PM 25 July 2025.
Please note referee reports must be received by 5:00 PM 25 July 2025, so early application and nomination of referees is strongly advised. We encourage you to check online if their references have been lodged and gently remind them if not.
3. Part time/Job share
Each Health service will have different PT/JS opportunities and requirements. Please contact the health service you are interested in working with directly to see if PT/JS opportunities are available.
